Video game developer Turbine has announced that the five-year anniversary celebrations for its MMO The Lord of the Rings Online have been extended until May 9 because of their popularity with the players.

This means that those who have not logged into the MMO in some time can come back in order to get their serving of fireworks, special bar brawls and races before getting involved in the more serious anniversary content, including quests that offer special bonuses and are only available until May 9.

Turbine has been one of the first MMO creators to understand the potential of the free-to-play business model and since the switch The Lord of the Rings Online has reported significant increases in both the number of player and in the generated revenue, which is based both on microtransactions and on special VIP subscriptions.

The Lord of the Rings Online is set to get another expansion before the end of the year.
