The development team at Square Enix working on the Realm Reborn reboot of the MMO Final Fantasy XIV says that its new dynamic weather system will be mainly cosmetic, with fishing the only in-game activity that’s directly affected by it.

Naoki Yoshida, a producer working on the game, tells the fans on the official forums that, “since it obviously doesn’t rain in the in desert regions like Ul’dah, there will be sand storms instead. Also, as you saw in the magitek intro, there are snowy regions which will have blizzards.”

Weather will affect fishing because it changes the water temperature and the way the fish behave.

It’s unclear why Square Enix is not using weather data to also influence battles or player movement.

A Realm Reborn is designed to eliminate all the problems that affected Final Fantasy XIV at launch and will arrive on the PlayStation 3 and the PC before the end of the year.
