The enhanced version of Final Fantasy X and its sequel X-2, appropriately titled Final Fantasy X/ X-2 HD Remaster, was released by developer and publisher Square Enix two weeks ago for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles from Sony.

Considered one of the best games in the series, the popular role playing game can now reach a whole new audience or allow long-time fans to relive fond memories from times long past (it did come out back in 2001 after all).

After the similarly remastered Kingdom Hearts HD, it was time for the PlayStation 2 to give up its exclusive hold on the world of Spira. The improved games come in a 16:9 HD presentation, with high quality textures, improved lightning and remade character models, and even a remixed orchestral score, marking Square Enix’s most ambitious remake yet.

A very helpful comparison video has been assembled by the talented individuals at Digital Foundry, illustrating all the improvements in the overhauled versions. According to them, the bump in resolution that the game has received was accompanied by assets that were remade from scratch and by much more detailed textures, along with tweaked texture filtering and fully dynamic shadows.

The video shows that the PlayStation Vita version can go toe-to-toe with the PlayStation 3 one, and that both of them are visibly superior to the PS2 one.
