Jack Tramiel, who was a survivor of the Holocaust and led the company that created the Atari ST, the Jaguar and the Lynx, passed away on Sunday at the age of 83, according to reports from family and friends.

Tramiel is known for his work in the personal computing and gaming spaces, after he founded Commodore during the ‘50’s and then went to oversee the team which created a number of home consoles during the ‘80’s.

In 1984 he purchased the Atari branded home console and computer divisions from Warner Communications, which has since become Time Warner, after the great 1983 video game crash.

The firm was sold in 1996 to JT Storage.

Jack Tramiel was born in 1929 and grew up in Poland, where his family was captured by Nazis and sent to Auschwitz, which they survived, before being transferred to a labor camp.

After the United States army liberated the area, Tramiel immigrated to the US and then joined the military before becoming a successful businessman.
