The new consoles need to expand towards entertainment

Patrick Liu, a former DICE developer who is currently working at Rovio, believes that home console producers are concentrating on entertainment services for their next generation of consoles in order to try and keep them relevant in the marketplace.

The game creator tells GamesIndustry.biz, “Mobile and PC do so much else and people only have so much money to invest. So they have to remain relevant, but that upsets the core gamers. It’s a dilemma.”

Liu says there’s still demand for consoles like the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, but there’s a lot of growth in the mobile and the social space which increases competition.

DICE is at the moment working on Battlefield 4, which will receive a full reveal for its multiplayer mode during the Electronic Arts E3 2013 press conference.
