A new report coming from the European Commission says that when it comes to social networking Habbo Hotel and the Xbox Live service from Microsoft are the safest options available.

The Digital Agenda study has surveyed nine different networks between march and June 2011 and the two safest options were highlighted because they have default settings that make profiles created by minors only available to those who are friends and to approved contacts.

Neelie Kroes, who is the vice president of the Digital Agenda program at the European Commission, stated, “Young people enjoy and derive great benefits from social networking online but are often not conscious enough of risks such as grooming.”

The representative added that the Commission might issue recommendations for all social networks towards the end of 2011, with the stated aim of making it easier to protect minors from having their profiles available to all other users.
