Playing football, shooting mutants and managing a team

Andrei Dumitrescu: It's the fall launch season which means that left and right publishers are putting out new games and tempting players with big new releases but unfortunately there are only about 48 hours in a weekend and some really need to be dedicated to sleeping, housework, socializing and watching the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.

The rest can be given up for gaming, with my main time waster being the demo version of Football Manager 2012, from Sports Interactive and SEGA.

I already gave up many hours of my life to this series, going back as far as '97 or '98 and it seems that I will give up even more because the developers have managed to expand upon the foundation laid last year and create a very engaging and slick experience.

Sitting home playing Football Manager 2012 while matching a few matches from the Premier League is pretty much my favorite scenario for the afternoons to come but I might also get roped by my brother into some more hands on matches of FIFA 12, again Liverpool versus Arsenal.

FIFA 12 is best enjoyed with a controller but I am stubborn enough to choose playing on the PC with me on the keyboard and my opponent using the Logitech controller.

And when sports, be it because of defeat or too much success, becomes overwhelming I plan to seek refuge in RAGE, the first person shooter from id Software and Bethesda.

I am playing on the PC and the game had a rough patch soon after launch, mostly because of issues linked to drivers from Nvidia and AMD.

The game received one big update and I will venture out into the Wasteland in order to slay some mutants and race some dune buggies around.

My colleague Andrei Dobra is off this week but you will hear more from him next Friday.
