Preparing for Attila by playing Europa Barbarorum

We are four days away from the launch of the new Total War: Attila and I am excited enough for the coming experience from The Creative Assembly that I began playing the Barbarian Invasion expansion for the original Rome, which deals roughly with the same theme, although its mechanics are rather antiquated at the moment.

The first Roman-themed title in the series was the subject of much debate in the Total War fan community.

I mostly play with the Europa Barbarorum mod these days, which totally transform the core mechanics and the feel of the game, so it was a shock to return to its original state.

I like Total War a lot but Rome feels antiquated at the moment, especially when compared to Rome II.

Many loyal fans tend to wear rose-tinted glasses when dealing with older titles and I can sometimes be one of them, but this time around I am focused on Attila and the many ways it can improve the series.

The most exciting element is the horde mechanics for barbarian factions and the way they will increase the importance of the campaign map and hopefully lead to major battles that can decide the fate of factions.

Total War: Attila will be launched on the PC on February 17.
