No studio can keep up with the demands of the modern player

John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment, says that he expects the coming The Elder Scrolls Online to run into a problem linked to lack of content soon after launch because its core model is obsolete.

He writes on his official blog that, “TESO looks like it’s going to follow the content model and it’s going to have a lot of players. I’m willing to bet that it hits the same problem that SWTOR did. Just not enough to do.”

Smedley praises the team at BioWare for the effort it has put into Star Wars: The Old Republic, but he says that there’s no way for a modern studio to create enough quests and areas to satisfy the increasing appetite of gamers.

Sony Online Entertainment wants to solve the issue by allowing the community to get access to the tools that were used to create an MMO in order to put their own content together.

This is one of the main design features of the coming EverQuest Next, which will arrive this year.
