It's unclear what changes are being made to the MMO

The team working on The Elder Scrolls Online at ZeniMax Online announces that it is taking down both the North American and the European mega-servers of the game in order to perform maintenance on them, but there’s no official reason why the move was required.

The studio says that it expects both of them to be back up and running by 9 AM Central European Standard Time and that more details will be offered via the official Twitter account if there’s an extension of the downtime.

It’s a particularly bad time to take down The Elder Scrolls Online because Memorial Day is being celebrated in the United States, which means that there are plenty of gamers with a free day who might be tempted to spend it playing the MMO.

Late last week, the company added the Craglorn adventure zone to the title, allowing those with high level characters to tackle a range of new quests in order to get access to some special rewards.

Bethesda and ZeniMax Online remain committed to the idea of delivering quality content to The Elder Scrolls Online and the two companies plan to add a new area, called Crypt of Hearts, in about six weeks.

The game is now offered on the PC and will also be launched with a delay on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

UPDATE: The downtime is now over and The Elder Scrolls Online is playable.
