Speaking on television on the first day that the PEGI system was introduced in the United Kingdom, Ian Livingstone, the president of Eidos, stated that, “These are simply a guideline as most of the content you see today is also online.”

He added, “You should take responsibility as a parent, and as a guardian.”

The video game executive has emphasized the fact that parents are responsible for the content that their children access and that they should use the PEGI system as a helpful aid rather than as an ultimate authority.

Livingstone also made clear that the adoption of PEGI was “driven by the games industry” and that it “hasn’t been forced upon them” by the European Union or by any other authorities.

The Pan European Game Information uses five age rating categories and allows those who buy games to evaluate at a glance the kind of content that players can be exposed to.
