The team at the Paradox Development Studios says that the coming Conquest of Paradise expansion for Europa Universalis IV will make Native American tribes more interesting to play by adding two new mechanics: migration and federation building.

The first of them will allow those factions that only occupy one province to move to an unsettled area, which means that they abandon all their buildings but gain power that they can use to dominate more settled tribes.

The company explains in an official blog that, “Federations are a Native American specific mechanic that works like a defensive alliance, except it has a leader. A Federation’s leader is changed every time the current leader dies and is selected based on, among other things, the tribe’s prestige and diplomatic reputation.”

Federations allow members to fight between themselves but protects them from outside invaders, which makes it a good way for players to expand their own empires while gaining some measure of defense against bigger rivals.

Conquest of Paradise for Europa Universalis IV will be out in January 2014.
