The team at Paradox Development Studios reveals that the upcoming Conquest of Paradise expansion for Europa Universalis IV will include an independence war mechanic for its new colonies, which is inspired by the American Revolution.

All nations that have a colonial overlord will quickly begin to acquire a liberty desire, which shows how much they are interested in separating from the mother country.

Increasing tariffs, the passage of time and event chains will influence its evolution and as more liberty is gained, countries will get a bigger manpower pool and smaller maintenance costs for their army.

Once the value goes over 50, they can declare a war and battle their colonial master in order to become entirely independent.

The studio explains in the forums that, “we took inspiration from history where French aid was essential in helping the USA become independent. One of the new features for all countries is a diplomatic option called support independence.”

Conquest of Paradise for Europa Universalis IV will be out on January 14.
