14 DAY TRIAL // The studio behind the acclaimed and highly atmospheric Dreamfall games, Red Thread Games, has just released a new trailer for its upcoming first-person horror survival game, titled Draugen.
The game's title is based on the Norwegian word used for mythological undead creature, which intrepid spelunkers in Skyrim are very familiar with. The title is fitting, seeing how the game is set on the rugged west coast of Norway, sometime during the 1920s.
Red Thread Games won a sizable $144k / €105k grant from the Norwegian Film Institute in order to get Draugen going. The game is currently in development for Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, with Virtual Reality support as well.
The trailer features a narrative that makes one wish all game development studios would hire professional writers to take care of their text, instead of the usual copy-paste work from Michael Bay movies, which in itself is a less humorous copy-paste job from old Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.
The video sets the mood for the upcoming adventure, showing the player exploring a shoreline and some indoor locations, with the word of the day being extremely creepy misty fjords. Players take on the role of an American scientist exploring a remote fishing village where everyone has mysteriously disappeared.
The unfathomable depths of the ocean have always been a source of wonder and dread, from rubber Loch Ness monsters to the giant sea serpents that pop up on ancient maps and form the bread and butter of cryptozoology.
Red Thread Games boss Ragnar Tørnquist describes the game as "Gone Home meets Amnesia" or "HP Lovecraft meets Dostoyevsky," both of which are some bold statements, so hopefully the studio will live up to the hype.
