The only fully developed character apart from Adam Jensen

Deus Ex games are ambiguous affairs, with stories that begin shrouded in fog and end complete with over the top conspiracy theories and often the characterization of the people one meets in them suffers a little, because most of them talk about the craziest things like they are everyday occurrences.

This is no different in Human Revolution where there are two categories of characters: those who exist only in the context of one quest and only really interact with the player to offer information and rewards and those that exist throughout the experience, accompanying the player since he first starts off to the bitter or glorious end.

Among them the standout is, for me, the leader of the company that employs Adam Jensen, the wealthy, smart, cunning and very oily Mister Sarif.

Initially he seems like a very good employer who has some very special security needs and that's what leads him to hire Jensen, towards whom he appears like a father figure.

Once the game progresses more sides of David Sarif begin to emerge and I was never quite able to completely decide what kind of game he was playing and what his ultimate aims were.

Every conversation with him was a pleasure because of the always present potential for surprise, both in terms of the overall narrative and in terms of emotions that Sarif would communicate or try and conceal.

Speaking to him I almost wanted to be able to disable my conversation augmentation, because I wanted to interact and talk without any enhancements, pitting my wit against his.

A lot of Sarif's attraction as a character is down to his voice work, which might seem a little off putting initially but manages to very well convey the complexity of the character, the mix of good intentions and ambition that pushes him forward, towards his ultimate fate.
