As already announced, the team at Bungie has taken both the servers for Destiny and the official studio site down for maintenance and it is expected that both will be back up and running in about two hours, if everything goes according to plan and no unexpected problems arise.

The move was first announced yesterday and is designed to deliver some infrastructure-related improvements for the game.

Bungie emphasizes that this is not the long-awaited update 1.1.1 for Destiny, although the changes made at the moment are linked to its eventual deployment, which is still scheduled to take place before the end of February.

The official Twitter account of the studio also says that it acknowledges that players are not happy with the relatively long downtime for Destiny but that it is necessary to improve the overall player experience.

Update 1.1.1 is designed to deal with the heavy weapon ammo bug and other issues, and the company is currently also working on a new expansion called House of Wolves.

It is supposed to be launched in the second financial quarter of the year and will bring with it a new big raid, more strikes and an upgraded level cap for Guardians.

UPDATE: The maintenance has been extended for one hour.
