Making a deal with Microsoft to publish a game involves an "existential risk" for independent developers, at least according to Jonathan Blow, the man behind hits like Braid.

Microsoft crafted for itself a not so impressive reputation among independent developers, as it requires a lot of paperwork in order to get a game released on its Xbox Live Arcade or on the Xbox Live Indie section.

In order to highlight this condition, Jonathan Blow talked with Polygon about the "existential risk" independent developers take when dealing with Microsoft.

"One day [Microsoft] might just wake up irritated, or just get a crazy idea that they want to do something a different way now, and in the process they make your life hell or [mess] up your game," Blow said.

"I think there are very few developers who will tell you that Microsoft treated them respectfully, though there are a few that do feel that way."

Jonathan Blow's next game, The Witness, will appear on PC, iOS, and only on the PlayStation 4.
