During this year's edition of the E3 gaming expo, publisher Deep Silver has announced that Dead Island 2 is coming to next-gen platforms in Spring 2015.

The second installment in the series is taking a very different approach to multiplayer than the initial title or Dead Island: Riptide did, by allowing seamless drop-in-drop-out multiplayer instead of the traditional co-op setup where you create a specific game with a set number of players.

That means that, while playing, you can have other people (up to 8 players are supported on a map) joining your game and helping you out, making co-op the natural gameplay mode in Dead Island 2, and providing a much more organic experience.

Of course, should you want to play all by yourself, there's always the option to turn the feature off and brave the zombie infestation like the worthy descendant of Rambo that you are.

"You can play alone if you want, but as soon as you're connected and you're willing to play with other people, they will join your world, your server," game director Bernd Diemer has revealed.

"We didn't want to make a competitive game where it's about killing other players and racking up a kill count, because that's not Dead Island. It's mostly about having fun and playing with other people," Diemer continues during the interview with GameTraiers.

Dead Island 2 is coming out on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms, sometime in spring 2015.
