Bohemia Interactive's DayZ standalone game has surpassed their every expectation, selling more than 800K units in the first month it became available for purchase.

DayZ originated as an Arma 2 mod, a merciless zombie survival first-person shooter. Following its success, Arma developer Bohemia Interactive decided to work on a fully fledged standalone version, and they are currently undergoing a closed alpha test.

DayZ is now available on Steam Early Access, and in spite of the developer's warnings that the version is a barebones one meant to help with the development process, fans seem to have flocked to the game, marking record sales.

The total sales numbers and the team's surprise are detailed in a Reddit thread, where a Bohemia Interactive member is optimistic regarding the effects on the development process.

Managing to sell almost 180K units in its first 24 hours alone, the series reached the 400K milestone during its first week, topping Steam's Christmas sale charts and now reaching more than 800K units sold, greatly surpassing the developer's conservative expectations.
