Cevat Yerli, the leader of developer Crytek, says that Ryse: Son of Rome is not a hack and slash title and uses the terms combat game to describe the new experience and justify its use of Quick Time Events.

He tells CVG that, “We wanted to tell the story of a soldier and a substantial proportion of that is fighting. I don't like the term hack and slash - our game is a combat game. We are definitely as accessible as any other combat game - but hack and slash is, for me, more like fantasy monsters.”

The fact that main character Marius is battling human but barbarian enemies allows Crytek to deploy QTEs as a way of showing the savagery of the battles.

At the same time, Ryse uses a high number of cinematic cutscenes in order to convey the emotion associated with the expansion of the Roman Empire.

Son of Rome is a launch title for the Xbox One.
