Brendan Iribe, the chief executive officer of the company behind the Oculus Rift, believes that at the moment, virtual reality seems like it’s connected to gaming but that in the near future, it could be used in a variety of other fields.

He tells Gamasutra that, “Real estate, medical, architecture, movies -- how long will move theaters be around if you have an IMAX in sunglasses in your pocket? I think that's going to happen faster than people are expecting.”

Iribe says that in just one year, the Oculus Rift has moved from a crowdfunded prototype that had major motion blur and was held together with duct tape to a solid device that is backed by serious investor money and has solved the major tech issues that the community flagged down.

A consumer version of the virtual reality helmet is expected to arrive on the market this year and more titles that support it will be launched.
