The development team at Firaxis announces that all those who are interested in Civilization V will be able to play it for free via Steam starting on Thursday, in order to get a look at the core mechanics of the turn-based strategy title.

The free period will start on June 6 at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time and will run until June 9 at the same time.

Civilization V has been a rather big step forward for the strategy series.

The game has introduced hexagons, which have changed the pace of the game, and a rule that allows just one combat capable unit to occupy one area at a time.

Firaxis has already launched an expansion that introduces religion and espionage and is currently working on Brave New World.

It will introduce new trade mechanics and more options for the late game.
