Bungie says that the MMO elements included in its upcoming Destiny are designed to expand the core shooter foundation and make the players more interested in the performance of their peers and the gear they are using.

According to an interview with VG247 from Eric Osborne, a senior writer and community manager, the entire role-playing element of the game comes from player interaction and the cosmetic changes they undergo.

He states, “It sort of tells a story for you and legacy for you, so if you do a lot of competitive multiplayer and then you enter a public space and see someone who’s been doing a ton of cooperative modes or maybe a strike or a raid, they’re going to have different gear than you have and you’ll be able to see the things they’re wearing.”

The core of the Destiny experience is a first-person shooter that players will be able to enjoy on their own, but working with others and as part of a community will make the entire experience more enjoyable.
