Cliff Bleszinski might not be actively working on a video game project but the former Epic Games leader is ready to comment on the most important trends of the industry, including the newfound reliance on Kickstarter and other crowd funding solutions.

The developer tells Engadget that, “People don’t recognize Kickstarter is only one-third about the money. It’s also about the community; you get it instantly built and the PR marketing you get.”

He adds, “People invested their money, and now they care. They’re reading your updates.”

Bleszinski believes that Kickstarter is a democratic space and says that gamers should back big projects linked to the platform as well as small indie initiatives.

Kickstarter has been used by teams like Double Fine and Obsidian to fund projects that would not be accepted by a traditional publisher.
