Red Dead Redemption was one of the biggest surprises of the year, as even if it came from Rockstar, specifically, the company's San Diego studio, there were a lot of concerns about its quality.

In the end, the game went on to gain critical acclaim, commercial success and brought back the Red Dead franchise with a huge bang.

One of the most important features of Red Dead Redemption was its narrative, which told the story of cowboy John Marston as he is forced to round up his former friends so he can get back to his family and live a quiet and simple life on the frontier.

Rockstar always had a reputation for adding top notch stories to its games, but Red Dead Redemption really takes it up a level over the likes of Gran Theft Auto IV and other, previous titles.

In a time of outlaws, John Marston stays true to his mission and brings a dose of justice (or injustice, depending on your own choices) to the Wild West, touching the lives of many of its inhabitants, both in the USA and in Mexico.

In some cases, this might be just the most adult story ever to appear in a Rockstar game, even if it doesn't have any controversial content, like the infamous Hot Coffee segment in Gran Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Marston is tempted at every corner, but he stays true to his word, and meets unique characters that help him on his journey.

But while some may argue that the whole story was a bit predictable in some places, the ending was pretty shocking for most players, who, over the many hours spent in the game, forged a solid relationship with Marston.

The end, and I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn’t reached it yet, was definitely a turning point for many.

For some, it turned an impressive game into one of the best titles of the year, while for others it completely ruined every connection they forged with it.

It is this moment that makes Red Dead Redemption have one of the best narratives of the year.

In case you haven’t experience it just yet, Red Dead Redemption is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
