The impressive game needed a custom online solution that worked across platforms

DICE has confirmed that its upcoming Battlefield 4 shooter will not use the cloud compute features of the Xbox One next-gen console, as the studio wanted a custom online solution, at least at launch.

Battlefield 4 is set to make its debut next week across the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and in November for the PS4 and Xbox One.

After learning that Microsoft was offering Xbox One game developers free access to its cloud compute feature, it seems that DICE declined to use it, at least for the launch of Battlefield 4, according to the studio's Patrick Bach.

"Not from day one," Bach told GamesIndustry about the use of the cloud on Xbox One. "The reasons for that are multiple. We started this project before these plans were locked down, so we didn't dare fiddle too much with it. Also, we're not Xbox One exclusive, so we needed a solution that would work on all platforms. We're on five platforms, so we need something that's Battlefield, not Xbox One."

Bach's statement doesn't rule out a transition to the Xbox One cloud of Battlefield 4's online tech, but things are still unclear.
