The crowd funding service can also cause problems for developers

Alex Thomas, one of the co-founders of Stoic Games, has written a blog addressing the funding that The Banner Saga has received via Kickstarter and the various advantages and problems of crowd funding.

The Banner Saga was backed by more than 20,000 and got more than seven times the sum the team had originally asked for.

Thomas acknowledges that some reactions from backers, especially after the launch of the free Factions multiplayer side of Banner Saga, have been tough to stomach because fans were disappointed with the way Stoic Games approached the development process.

The designer adds, “Do I regret going with Kickstarter? Not one bit. If this is the new way to make games, there’s more than one thing ‘new’ about it, but I can’t imagine doing it any other way.”

The full blog post on Gamasutra offers much more information on what it takes to create a game using Kickstarter.
