Darby McDevitt, one of the leading writers working on Assassin's Creed at Ubisoft, says that the series might one day include a full game set in the modern era, but at the moment the focus is on other historical periods.
Gamespot quotes the developer speaking at a panel during Comic-Con as saying that no decision has been made on the future of the franchise.
He adds, "I think the Shogunate is in a cool era but it’s not up to one person, and whatever we do, we’ll make it cool."
At the moment, Ubisoft is putting the finishing touches on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which uses a pirate as the main protagonist and introduces naval battles as one of the core game mechanics.
The new title will be offered on the PC, current-gen consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in the fall.
