In Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, players will control a present day employee of Abstergo Entertainment, who in turn explores the life of Edward Kenway through a new and improved Animus system, according to Ubisoft.

Previous Assassin's Creed games saw players guide Desmond Miles as he reconnected with the memories of past ancestors through the Animus, a mysterious device made by the Templars and copied by the Assassins.

With Black Flag, however, players will control an employee of the Templar-controller company Abstergo. This means that he'll have access to the latest and best looking Animus to explore the memories of Edward Kenway.

"As we see, the Animus is so much cleaner than it ever has been before, because before you’ve always been hacking into it but now you’re actually working for the people who make the Animus, so you can see our UI menus are super-clean, everything is much more crisp. It’s no longer about ‘sync issues’ or anything like that, so it’s quite a different take on it. It’s an exciting way to take the franchise forward," Ubisoft's Karl Von Der Lutte told VG247.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will be out this fall.
