The gaming handheld can win battles with smartphones

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, reveals that Animal Crossing for the 3DS handheld is one of a limited number of games from his company that have attracted a majority female audience.

The executive tells Nikkei in an interview that, “If we look at the first three weeks of Animal Crossing sales to the end of November, the highest group is 19 to 24 year-old women.”

He adds, “This is an age-range that is typically found in fewer numbers for Nintendo. I've never seen anything like it; a game that sells like this on a Nintendo hardware.”

Overall, for the Nintendo 3DS, 69 percent of gamers are male and just 31% female.

Iwata believes that the demographics for Animal Crossing reveal that the arguments showing that smartphones will end the reign of handheld consoles are not entirely correct and wants more Nintendo products that appeal to young women.
