Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of the North American division of Nintendo, announces that the much rumored line of video game related figurines from the company is called Amiibo and it is designed to deliver a new type of game experience on the Wii U home console.

The new toys will be launched later in the year and during the E3 2014 presentation, the team working on them explained that they were designed to make it easier for the player to connect them to the home console using the GamePad.

Nintendo is not saying how many of the figurines it is planning to create, but each of them will have two-way communication with the hardware, which means that as players use them, they will gain experience and some of their core characteristic will evolve.

It seems that the company wants gamers to choose their favorite characters and use them in a variety of video games, starting with Super Smash Bros.

At the same time, support for the NFC figurines included in the Amiibo initiative will also be added to Mario kart 8 at some point.

Nintendo says that it will deliver more information on the new concept in the coming days and that launch will probably take place this year.

Update: A trailer showing the figurines in action has arrived.
