A new report claims that the much rumored Amazon home console might be launched in time for the holiday shopping season of this year, which means that it will compete directly with the new Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Destructoid cites information from inside sources who claim that the company is at the moment putting the finishing touches on the hardware and software of the device, which will be ready for manufacturing soon.

Apparently, it will use a Qualcomm MPQ, part of the Snapdragon line that has already powered smart TVs and set-top boxes.

The Amazon home console is mainly designed to allow users to stream video content via the Prime service and play Android-based video games.

It seems that the device will deliver less computing power than the Sony and Microsoft next-gen consoles, but Amazon has a strategy of initially gaining market share by offering a cheap device, which might work in the current economic climate.
