The game offers Steamworks support and has achievements and leaderboards

Developer Hidden Path Entertainment and publisher Microsoft announce that they are working on Age of Empires II HD, which is set to be launched exclusively via Steam on April 9.

The game is already available for pre-order with a 10 percent cut.

Age of Empires II HD is designed to use the 1080p+ resolution and has a new engine with improved textures, better water, more ambient lighting effects, and an improved fire mechanics.

The introduction of Steamworks means that the strategy game now also has improved matchmaking, cloud support, Achievements and leaderboards.

Age of Empires II HD also supports Steam Workshop, which means it will be easier to install and play mods.

The announcement states, "Explore all the original single player campaigns from both Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansion, choose from 18 civilizations spanning over a thousand years of history, and head online to challenge other Steam players in your quest for world domination throughout the ages."
