Nintendo has confirmed that this fiscal year it is going to release a new Mario game for the 3DS, and that its gameplay will have traditional 2D side-scrolling mechanics.

Nintendo has been using its biggest mascot, Mario, to heavily promote the 3DS handheld console. It already released two big games last year, including Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, both of which became hugely successful through the holiday season, while deploying special, customized editions of the 3DS in limited quantities.

Now, as part of Nintendo’s financial briefing, the company’s President Satoru Iwata, confirmed that a new Mario game was coming to the 3DS.

According to the executive, the title will be a 2D side-scrolling action Super Mario game, in the vein of older experiences from the series. It will be a key title in the next fiscal year, so expect the game to appear sometime towards the end of 2012, right before the winter holiday season.

Be ready for some more details about the Mario title in the near future.
