A new version of the PlayStation 3 home console from Sony, with a 12 GB hard drive and a price tag of 199 dollars (155 Euro) will be launched on the North American market on August 18.

According to CVG, an image for the new console was posted on the site of Future Shop but has since then been removed and other sources also say the device is ready to go on shelves at Kmart.

A cheaper version of the PlayStation 3 is already available in Europe, but Sony has not commented on whether it will also be launched in North America.

Sony is dropping the price of the PS3 in order to make it more attractive to gamers in the months that are left before the launch of the PlayStation 4, which is currently slated to November, as is its rival Xbox One from Microsoft.
