Video game developer Patrice Desilets says that his 1666 project was designed to be an Assassin’s Creed title set in Amsterdam that aimed to once again push the boundaries of the franchise.

Gameranx translates an interview in which he says, “Rembrandt was still alive in 1666, died in 1669. I took one of his most famous paintings, The Philosopher, and put it in the design documents – so I referred to this matter, more or less.”

The team was in the pre-production stage for 1666, focused on creating core game mechanics and on researching the historical era.

Patrice Desilets was one of the original creators of the Assassin’s Creed concept.

He returned to Ubisoft from THQ earlier in the year and since then, he has once more left the company, claiming that he was fired for creative vision differences.
