If you’re the kind who likes challenging roguelike games but rage when they get too tough for you to handle, then walk away. Just walk away. Overture is as merciless as it is adorable to look at. And it’s really adorable.
In Overture the goal is simple. Enter the dungeon, fight monsters for gold, experience and various types of loot that can be used to make your character tougher. Once you’re sure you have top shelf gear, you can take on the big boss and really see what you’re made of.
Before you do that, you should know that Overture spares no expense in being a really tough game to beat. There are swarms of monsters that come at you in small or large numbers and there’s always that one guy who manages to sneak up when you just pwned twenty enemy champions and escape with 1 HP. It does get frustrating at times but 11/10 times you will gladly pick up your bow, staff or sword to fight again.
Overture rocks marvelous 2D pixel graphics that allow it to run smoothly on any given machine, even if it’s steam or coal powered. Everything works so smooth and happens so fast that at times it’s kind of hard to keep up with what’s going on on the screen. Crit values and fireballs fly around, you barely have an opening to dodge monsters, it get’s really crazy really fast.
Slain monsters drop items that can be equipped to make your hero tougher, there is gold to collect and get rich, potions to survive on and fellow warriors to rescue so that they can join in on the fight. Everything in the game is done using a handful of controls and when it comes to dealing with punishingly fun games such as this one, having less is the way to go.
There’s always a great sense of satisfaction when you manage to beat a game that’s built to make that goal very difficult. Having 24 character classes to choose from, a random dungeon to immerse yourself in every time you hit start and that mesmerizing chiptunes soundtrack makes Overture a wonderful experience.
