It’s not often that you get to be the antagonist in a game and when that happens, it tends to be kind of refreshing. In MidBoss you play as an imp who has the ability to possess the bodies of those who have fallen in battle. Using this power, he now sets his mind to become the most powerful creature in the entire dungeon.
MidBoss is a dungeon crawler with roguelike, RPG and turn based elements that make it belong to a genre all on itself. You have to explore a vast dungeon, chamber by chamber, and challenge every beast that you encounter, that is, if it is stronger than you or if you want to grab some XP and maybe some loot.
The goal of the game is to become the most powerful dweller of that dungeon and you won’t know which one it is until you search the entire thing. At first you get to fight a lot of rats and bats, but after a while more interesting foes emerge and the game really becomes challenging.
MidBoss is an easy game to play and it gets easier if you have some prior experience with roguelikes. Fighting the beasts, humanoids and the undead is done with a simple click and combat uses a TBS system in which for every move you make, the enemy takes one too.
Depending on the items you equip, your attacks may or may not be very successful, nothing in MidBoss is certain and it’s what makes it tough and you cautious. Moreover there’s that thing called permanent death which means that if you die, you have to start all over again and that will really keep you on your toes.
In MidBoss, when you restart a game, the dungeon minions are never in the same place and don’t drop the same loot so at times, you’ll feel like beating the game relies on luck just as much as it does on skill.
MidBoss won’t dazzle you with creative gameplay mechanics or excellent graphics but it does offer a relaxing and enjoyable experience, more so if you’re a fan of dungeon crawlers. I have to admit that killing a monster, possessing it to use its abilities to kill another to possess and so on, is pretty nice.
However, the game does need a bit of polishing in the visuals and HUD departments but overall, it’s pretty solid and it’s worth a shot. So give it a try and if it strikes you like a good future enjoyment prospect, stop by the MidBoss Greenlight page to show your support.
