Indie developers are usually free to expand their ideas as they wish and include everything that goes through their head, which is why most of these titles result in so much fun. However, from time to time, a downright brilliant product is released by these developers, one that manages to redefine the genre and basically spawn a variety of spinoffs and clones.
World of Goo is a fun little platformer that uses physics as the main gameplay ingredient, since it all revolves around you ability to build various objects out of goo balls. As you might expect, they come in a limited quantity and you have to use your imagination in order to come up with the required constructions and reach the pipes at the end of each level.
Speaking of which, there is also a plot that goes on around in the background, which is actually quite amusing and filled with interesting references to various other games or events. In essence, it all starts when the goo balls are awakened when a large number of pipes suddenly make their appearance throughout the land and the World of Goo Corporation sucks these goo balls into the pipes, in order to process them into various other products.
As previously mentioned, it all revolves around you ability to use intuition, logic and personal experience in order to come up with viable constructions that can help you bypass various obstacles throughout the levels. Hence, the goo balls must be connected with each other in such a way as to support themselves, as well as make their way across the obstacles.
Naturally, a good physics engine was required in order to properly portray and simulate your creations, which is achieved in full by the game. The graphics engine is very nice as well, considering the fact that the entire action happens in a 2D environment and not too much detail can fit into such a crowded environment. The animations are very amusing, though, while the soundtrack can keep you company for hours without boring you.
In the end, World of Goo managed to do so much with basically very few elements, although it did require a lot imagination in order to be created. Not only that, but it also requires a lot of imagination in order to be played as well, which is always a fun gameplay gimmick to have in a game of this type.
