It’s not easy to come up with new ideas and put them into practice, which is why not everyone is a creative genius. However, using other people’s ideas to construct your own version of something is not at all a bad thing, because that’s how progress works in most cases. It’s important to add your own flavor to the formula, on the other hand, otherwise you end up with nothing but a clone on your hands.
Kuboom is a first-person shooter that aims to be a more low-poly Counter-Strike with simpler gameplay mechanics and a somewhat slower pace when it comes to the actual shooting. Unfortunately, the end result is a very unpolished FPS that suffers from a wide assortment of bugs, not to mention the fact that the gameplay has major issues as well.
To begin with, you have the option to customize your character with new skins and clothes, as well as gain levels to improve your rank. The cosmetic upgrades can be bought with real money, but you can enjoy the game just as well without them. On the other hand, it’s difficult to have a good time when the aiming system is terribly implemented and the shooting mechanics are so unrefined.
The problem is that the crosshair has some sort of inertia that cannot be disabled or controlled, which means that it keeps going for a bit after you stop moving your mouse. This is a terrible, terrible inconvenience in a fast-paced shooter, since it makes your reflexes worthless. Although you can probably learn to deal with this issue, it’s far more likely that you orientate toward a better game.
As for the graphics, the cubic style is not that bad, but it doesn’t impress either. Most of the assets are very basic and unimpressive, which makes the other issues stand out even more. It’s also worth noting that it takes a lot of bullets to kill another player, especially since the hitboxes are very unusual as well. Even if there are multiple game modes, none of them are original, since they resume to either FFA deathmatch or team-based deathmatch.
Although Kuboom is free-to-play, not even that is enough to be worth the effort in most cases, at least not until the gameplay issues are fixed. Hence, there are far better alternatives out there, including other free-to-play titles that feature much more refined gameplay mechanics.
