It’s tough to compete in the same category as World of Warcraft, and it has been like this for over a decade now. Blizzard has piles of cash it can throw at its game to keep it fresh and working flawlessly, while everyone else has to really impress in order to attract a decent player base and continue to operate. Free-to-play alternatives are a nice solution, but most of them suffer from a lack of depth and content.

Riders of Icarus is an action-oriented MMORPG that aims to provide the fans of the genre with new ways to farm and collect rare items. Its formula is very close to the classics such as WoW or Lineage, but there are a few key differences that should stick out and attract a few curious eyes. However, most of the gameplay is more or less the same, so it should be fairly easy for anyone to get into it from the first few minutes.

You start by choosing a class from a couple of available ones, and they each have a different roles in the game and in combat. Whether you want to be in the heart of each battle and play as a berserker, or you prefer to keep your distance and strike from afar, the game should accommodate every style. Granted, there’s nothing very original in this regard, so don’t expect to be blown away in any way.

When it comes to combat, you can choose between the classic hotkey-powered style, or you can opt for a much quicker and natural style involving the mouse only. Regardless of what you choose, however, it’s worth noting that there’s nothing exciting here, only mindless button mashing/clicking, which is a bit of a bummer. There are, however, other interesting things you can fill your time with.

One of these is beast taming, and the game banks a lot on this feature. In essence, it’s a lot like collecting Pokemon, because almost every monster you happen to bump into can be tamed and used as a mount. Hence, there’s always something exciting to hunt, not to mention the fact that you can also use dragons or a pegasus to fly and move a lot quicker than on the ground.

When it’s all said and done, Riders of Icarus is clearly not a revolution in the MMORPG genre, but it tries pretty hard to be different and provide its players with many possibilities. Hence, it can easily occupy a few hours of your life, especially if you are bored of everything else out there.
