Online games have advanced a lot in the past few years, and they have also reoriented themselves toward the free-to-play business model. Microtransactions are what keep most current MMOs afloat, because it’s much more convenient for the players to pay a lot of money when they are not actually required to do so.

Champions of Regnum is a fantasy MMORPG similar to titles like Lineage and World of Warcraft, featuring a couple of different races, the minimum amount of classes, and just enough diversity to make people curious. However, there’s nothing special about it once you log in, except maybe for the realm-vs-realm gimmick, which can get rather interesting if you have enough patience to get there.

However, the biggest disappointment awaits you in the character creation screen, because there are only four races and three different classes to choose from: warrior, archer, and mage. Thankfully, you can specialize a bit along the way, but that’s still not enough to make you feel different from the rest of the players. The races are very basic, with the exception of one, which doesn’t make any sense anyway.

In essence, most of your time is going to be spent killing various creatures, which in turn provides you with experience points and some loot. Stronger monsters drop better items, as it always has been, but it’s not as fun as you might think anyway. In fact, you can actually buy items using real money, which means that you can just dump a bit of cash in exchange for premium items that are better than what you can find by looting.

The most intriguing thing about the game is the RvR feature, which promises exciting things. Hence, the three realms are in a constant struggle, and you can participate in this fight by battling at the borders, killing enemies, and capturing buildings. On the other hand, you must be pretty powerful to last in such battles, and since it takes a lot of time to max out, it’s not a very attractive prospect.

All things considered, Champions of Regnum packs all the cliches one can remember when it comes to free-to-play MMOs. However, that’s not to say it’s awful, although there are far better alternatives out there. If you really need something to fill some time with on a regular basis, then this can just as well do the trick for you.
