Few titles in the Online gaming community have left a mark as deep as Lineage II did. This South Korean title was launched in 2003, and while indeed the fanbase has passed its prime, the recent decision to make it a free-to-play title has managed to breathe new life into it.
The game doesn't boast a story-driven experience, and neither are the players forced to choose any factions or races that are naturally opposed to each other. In Lineage, it doesn't matter if you create a dwarf or orc, you are all friendly or neutral to each other by default. Speaking of which, the game's race roster is quite varied, having the typical races found in other fantasy MMOs (humans, two types of elves, orcs, and dwarves) and a class that is unique to Lineage called the Kamael (fallen angel-like beings)
Unlike pretty much all other MMOs that came after it, Lineage 2 still hasn't managed to expand its character customization palette, although considering the game engine it currently runs, its no wonder. This doesn't mean that the game looks ugly, on the contrary, it is one of those rare cases where it looked flawlessly upon launch, yet managed to age quite gracefully with the passing of time.
Lineage's character class selection is quite large, since depending on what base race you choose, you get access to a variety of classes, while also being restricted from other. The pattern is of the typical tanky-fighter, mage, and nimble scout, with all other classes being variations of these archetypes, with multiple subclasses being unlocked as your character reaches certain level milestones and completes a set of specialized quests. For example, if you're a human, a fighter created can end up evolving into anything from a tanky sword and shield protector, a dual-wielding swordsman that is swift as the wind, or a polearm-wielding warlord. Gear, sockets, and tattoos further manage to tweak the strengths and weaknesses of each class, allowing you to create characters that are almost unique in their way.
An interesting system proprietary to lineage is the PK system where you can choose to activate PK (player-kill) mode at any moment and kill anyone indiscriminately. However, all that fun and eviscerating do not go unpunished, since killing innocent players brands you as an outlaw that can be killed without consequences. Going on a massive killing spree can eventually lead to the generation of a world bounty on your head, and players can eventually track you any time just so that they can bring you to justice.
While Lineage 2 is still limited by an aged graphics engine, the fact that it's continuously updated shows that the developers are interested in keeping the game alive as much as possible. More so, the only thing that can truly be considered aged are the graphics, since a lot of the mechanics and games features are still relevant even today.
