Some of the MMOs out there are basically part of the genre’s history at this point, since nothing would be the same without them. EverQuest, Ultima Online, World of Warcraft and RuneScape are just some of the examples that could echo for hours, but there are others as well. However, probably none of these has managed to provide the players with as much variety as EVE Online, although it obviously comes at a price.

EVE Online is like nothing else out there, since it would be suicide to try and dethrone the game now. The amount of content it features is truly staggering, and the developers have somehow managed to make it all work in harmony. Millions of players are part of the universe now, and many of them have been in it for many years. There are countless things that might attract you into EVE’s world, but there is one that probably trumps them all: freedom.

Although most MMOs are somewhat libertine in regards to what the players are allowed to do, EVE takes it one step further. World of Warcraft receives new players with quests and a neat story that evolves all the way to level 100, which is a great way to learn on the go and have fun at the same time. In here, on the other hand, you are on your own from the beginning. Sure, there are hints and tutorials, or even entire tomes you can read and memorize, but it won’t help until you start making decisions on your own.

You can be a miner that makes a living out of extracting materials from asteroids, or a pirate that attacks other players and loots their remains. You can even attack the entire game’s economy with bold plans and schemes, since everyone is doing it anyway. However, the main idea is that the game does not stop you from doing any of these things. In fact, it facilitates your ability to choose whatever path you may want, as long as you can accept that someone else out there is out to get you.

The general goal is to get more powerful the more you play, but it’s not that easy. Everyone is free to end your life at any time, so you have to watch out for bad guys. Getting with a guild is a good way to stay protected, but you’ll still have to roam the universe in search of work and money. Speaking of which, currency is important, because it allows you to improve your experience by a lot.

You can purchase better and bigger ships, as well as customize them with a multitude of parts. Getting the items you need is the easy part anyway, because just like in real life, it can be a hell of a struggle to make money. Your character can learn new skills and abilities as well, since you can always train a particular trait. Unlike in most other MMOs, these skills require real time to learn, which means hours or even days of just waiting for the experience bar to raise.

Lastly, the technical side of the game is not bad at all either. Sure, this is actually the second version of the game, given the fact that the first engine couldn’t keep up with modern demands. The ships are huge and insanely detailed, as are the various space stations, planets and colonies you’ll visit throughout the universe. Even your character can be customized in almost every conceivable way, since you even have access to face manipulation tools.

In short, it’s tough to say too much about EVE Online without risking a mistake. Even after hundreds of hours of gameplay, players still have many things they are not aware of, because you don’t need to know everything to be a part of the universe. Hence, you can be certain that the experience won’t get boring anytime soon, which is just as well, considering the fact that you have to pay a monthly subscription to keep playing.
