Melee combat is like the holy grail of multiplayer games as of late, with many attempts that came quite close to the perfect formula. However, it’s obviously very difficult to make the concept work, especially since players have to wield weapons using a mouse or a gamepad, a transition that is pretty hard to get right. Hence, most of the time such games fail to deliver in terms of fluidity.

Blood Ancestors is a multiplayer melee combat game in which you get to work with other players in order to accomplish a variety of objectives before the opposing team. The game also features a few MOBA elements, especially in terms of abilities and gameplay mechanics. As such, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get right down to the action, at least if you can overcome the rather clunky interface and the bugs in this early version.

Lore-wise, the whole thing revolves around of a race of slaves out for revenge after they escaped the grip of their former masters. Naturally, the story is not very important in a game such as this one, given the fact that most of the lore is found in the game’s description instead. However, at least you get two opposing factions, and since they uphold different ideologies, their approach to combat is different as well.

As mentioned before, there are multiple characters and classes to choose from, depending on which one suits your particular play style. Every champion also features multiple skills that can be changed during the match, depending on whether you want to be more aggressive or more defensive. These abilities function like those found in a classic MOBA, so you need to wait a few seconds for them to recharge in order to use them again.

Visually, the game is powered by Unreal Engine 4, so it certainly looks nice in terms of lighting and material quality. Granted, the level design could use more work, because the maps are pretty forgettable and unimpressive, sporting boring corridors and the usual open courtyard where most of the brawls take place. This is bound to change once more game modes are added, but it’s a pretty sour point at the moment.

Even if Blood Ancestors has some nice elements to work with, it’s far from complete right now, especially in terms of gameplay. The melee combat is not as satisfactory as it needs to be, mainly because the hits fall flat and there’s barely any collision or impact when you land a hit. Hence, we can only hope that things are going to get better in the future.
