Ever since the Early Access phenomenon started, developers have been approaching it from various angles, depending on what they are after. The honest ones provide their fans with a chance to be an active part of the development process, allowing them to come up with suggestions in order to make the overall experience more enjoyable for everyone. The dishonest ones use the Early Access tag as a way to sell unfinished games and make money without actually developing the games any further.

Battle Royale: Survivors is a third-person multiplayer shooter with a single game mode, namely the classic Last Man Standing. The “new” idea here is the top-down view, but there are quite a few problems with the implementations at this point, which includes the aiming system, the controls and the camera movement.

You can create a character when you log in for the first time, but there are not many choices in this regard, except if you are willing to pay real money in order to unlock costumes. After that, the only option is to jump straight into a game, because you can’t pick maps or choose a server from a list.

As soon as you spawn in the waiting room before a match, the controls make it clear that you are probably not going to have a good time. Character movement is jerky and imprecise, but it’s basically perfect if you were to compare it to the aiming system. There’s no crosshair to help you out, and to make things worse, once you start shooting you can’t adjust your aim at all. In fact, it would appear that most players just use melee weapons to kill people with guns, because it’s a lot easier to do so, and it’s not like they risk getting shot in the process either.

The maps are decent, sporting both urban and rural landscapes, but they are not quite as big as they could be. You can also go inside various buildings for cover or to search for equipment, but you should know that your character can only see in front of him in a small cone, which makes closed spaces very good spots for ambushes.

Speaking of equipment, aside from the usual guns and ammunition you can also find bulletproof vests, helmets and bags, the latter of which allow you to carry more stuff around. Medkits and bandages are pretty self-explanatory, and there are no vehicles to worry about, thankfully.

As far as the graphics are concerned, they are about as good as you would expect when you consider the gameplay quality. The top-down perspective is not a bad choice, but since walls do not become transparent once you are inside a building, sometimes it’s difficult to move around, especially since the controls are not very helpful either.

Battle Royale: Survivors feels more like a project that was compiled for the first time just minutes before it hit the Steam Early Access section. You have to deal with horrible controls, terrible aiming and more bugs than you can count, which is obviously a huge turn-off.

On the other hand, the microtransactions are fully integrated already, which means that you can spend actual money on costumes and loot boxes. This just goes to show what the priorities are in terms of development, which should make you think twice about the game’s future and its potential.
