The X-COM series is by far one of the most popular and revered turn-based strategy franchises out there, as well as one of the most well-known video games to feature a more realistic alien invasion. Since it was successfully brought back into the spotlight recently by new developers, it enjoyed a lot of attention, although not all of it was positive or fruitful.
X-COM: Enforcer strays pretty far from the original formula and features a very different approach altogether, given the fact that not even the genre is the same. Hence, the action is much more fast-paced and you play from a third-person perspective, a change that aims to facilitate the action-oriented gameplay mechanics and provide you with the necessary mobility to shoot as many aliens as possible.
The story is very simple and straightforward, with barely anything to make you curious or interested in what goes on in the background: extraterrestrials have attacked the Earth and the humans are trying to fight back, using alien technology against them. Thus, they devise a powerful robotic soldier called the Enforcer, which is sent from location to location in order to eliminate every alien it encounters.
The fast-paced nature of the game barely gives you enough time to breathe and assess the situation, let alone think about tactics or you progress. Not a lot of work went into the environments either, which means that they are all pretty repetitive and not very impressive to look at, or explore. You won’t even encounter too much resistance from the A.I., although the aliens do get a bit more difficult to kill if you increase the difficulty level.
You can find a variety of weapons as you go along, some of which are quite exciting and nicely modeled, making the experience a tad less boring. On the other hand, the camera position is extremely annoying and it makes the gameplay a lot more complicated, not to mention the speed boost that can make you go so fast you won’t even be able to see the character as he moves, nor anything else for that matter.
All things considered, X-COM: Enforcer had very few chances of success to begin with, since it was the brilliant TBS mechanics and the squad-based gameplay that made the series legendary. However, the developers could have at least tried to make it fun and come up with their own ideas in some regards, rather than just stuff the levels full of aliens and make you shoot all of them as fast as you can.
