The Wolfenstein series made a comeback a few years ago, and unlike many other remakes and second attempts at glory, this one actually worked pretty well. The protagonist was hardcore, the graphics were top-notch, and there was even the possibility to choose between stealth and all-out action. Naturally, the series continued after that, with every episode being slightly better at least in some regards.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is the latest entry in the series, and it brings the action into the US, although it’s not what you might expect. In case you are not aware, Wolfenstein takes place in an alternate history where the Nazis have managed to take over the world, including the US. Thus, America is ruled by ruthless murderers, which is why the rebels are actively trying to liberate the country and bring everything back to normal.
The New Colossus focuses on Blazkowicz and his exploits in the US, while also providing players with some insight into his childhood. Hence, you can now understand why he appears to be so ruthless, given the fact that he was pretty much traumatized by his father. Other interesting characters are introduced along the way too, and there are also some returning ones from previous episodes.
The main character is a bit more fragile in this installment, which means that you may have to stay behind cover more often in order to avoid certain death. You are no longer able to absorb so many bullets, even if you are wearing a particularly impressive armor.
As for the gunplay, the changes are not immediately noticeable, but the system is not exactly the same either. Hence, using the same strategies from The New Order might not show results here, but that’s not a huge issue if you can adapt.
Lastly, the visual presentation is as great as you can expect from a triple-A production, especially in terms of character modeling, animations, lip-sync and the post-processing effects added on top. Cutscenes actually look and feel like a movie, while the game itself is about as sharp and detailed as it can get nowadays.
Granted, you need a pretty powerful PC in order to get the most out of it, but the graphic settings are scalable to a degree, so it’s possible to enjoy the game even on a slightly older system.
Whether Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus hits the spot in the story department is entirely up to you, but the action is just as exciting as in all the previous titles in the series. Hence, you can have a lot of fun with the game if you are an old-school FPS fan.
