Warlock: Master of the Arcane is a turn-based strategy develop by a studio named Ino-Co Plus and published by Paradox Interactive.

One look at the Warlock: Master of the Arcane screenshots and you will think that it’s some kind of mod for Sid Meier’s Civilization series, and you would right do to so. It turns out that the type of gameplay used by Firaxis in their games is not patented of protected in any way, so any studio can do similar stuff. In fact, why not use a very popular recipe that's already known by the players to make your own game?

For the most part, if you’re played Sid Meier’s Civilization, especially the newer ones, you will be able to adapt to Warlock: Master of the Arcane. There are of course some differences and it looks like the developers from Ino-Co Plus managed to make some changes that turn their game into a better experience, although not all the time.

One of the things that I didn’t expect from a game that wants to be like Civilization was to provide such quality fun. Since many of the gameplay mechanic were the same I could spend more time figuring out what they did differently.

First of all, the research tree has been replaced by magic, and you no longer need people to build stuff that’s already in your kingdom. The units that you receive at the beginning of the game are powerful enough to resist the initial attacks, which only leave the user with more time to properly plan the game.

Warlock: Master of the Arcane also has a powerful engine, and it looks really good. The AI response is really quick and you don’t have to wait until when the turn ends.

Interestingly enough, many of the same strategies that work in Civilization also work in Warlock: Master of the Arcane, like building a massive economy and army while you’re making friends with everyone. When the betrayal is inevitable, no one is ready.

The Warlock: Master of the Arcane demo is pretty short, but it’s more than enough to get the ball rolling.
