Space sims seem to be in a second golden era nowadays, what with the release of giants like Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen. In fact, even more are scheduled to be released soon, so space sim fans everywhere should be more than happy with the current selection of games at their disposal. On the other hand, there’s always something more one could add to the genre.
Void Destroyer 2 is not on the scale of the two previously mentioned games, but then again it is an indie production that focuses on something other than size. Hence, this is a sandbox action game in which you have the liberty to explore a fairly interesting universe and choose what role you want to play in it. It’s still in its early access days, on the other hand, so you should be wary of bugs and unfinished components.
Freedom is the key word in Void Destroyer 2, because everything is left up to you when it comes to how you want to proceed from the first few minutes of games. There are many ships to pilot, purchase or build, ranging from small scouting vessels, all the way to huge cruisers. The fact that you can build, research and upgrade them opens up even more possibilities, which is great.
There’s also a plot you can follow in order to see the story to its completion and maybe get to know the universe and its inhabitants a little bit better. You can be a pirate and hijack ships in order to loot them, or you can focus on mining asteroids and making a living that way. Again, freedom is the key word, but the game is not quite there yet in regards to available content.
Thus, the galaxies feel empty and featureless most of the time, which is a bit of a bummer in a game that supposedly encourages exploration. Granted, it’s difficult for a small studio to include massive amounts of content, but looking at the void of space for long periods of time invites boredom to the party. On the other hand, there’s still plenty of time for the developers to add more content until the final version is released.
In the end, Void Destroyer 2 may not be for you if size is what attracts you, but it has tons of potential under the hood. As long as more features are added and the landscapes are populated a bit, Void Destroyer 2 could very be a serious contender on the indie space sim market.
